The story of Ulrich

Ulrich was born in Menziken, Canton Aargau, German-speaking Switzerland.

In 1960, his family moved to Zurich and opened a delicatessen shop, specialising in the sale of wines and cheeses, and he therefore grew up in a ‘tsunami’ of wonderful aromas and flavours.

His interest and passion for wine was born during a dinner at which Ulrich’s father served a bottle of wine from the renowned Neuchâtel wine region for the occasion. The impact was so strong that from that moment on, he set himself the goal of pursuing an education in the world of viticulture.

He did his studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, graduating in Agricultural Engineering and later in Industrial Production Engineering.

At the end of his studies, Ulrich took his first steps into the world of wine at the ‘Domaine de la Romanée Conti’ and the ‘Domaine Leroy’, under the guidance of Lalou (Marcelle) Bize-Leroy.

Back in Switzerland, he took over the management of ‘Cardinal Wädenswil’, a company in the beverage sector, and at the same time managed a wine shop in Zurich. He had various entrepreneurial experiences, but continued to cultivate his passion for the world of wine, keeping himself constantly up-to-date on new technologies and methods of viticulture.

In 2015, he was offered the purchase of a small winery, Colline di Sopra, which he visited and immediately fell in love with.

In early 2016, he took over the winery, which at the time consisted of only five hectares of vineyards.

He found in the vineyards, the landscape and the location of the winery the ideal place to realise his dream of creating high-quality wines by combining Tuscan tradition with the skills of the master vignerons of Burgundy.
